Hoi An: cooking class

17 June

Today I had a cooking class with Bay Mau Eco Cooking Tour.   We started at the local market to purchase ingredients, then went by boat to the school.

We travelled from the boat in traditional basket boats
Quite a popular tourist activity – and actually pretty fun.

This is our cooking school

At the school we were first given a demonstration of traditional ways of husking rice, making rice milk and making rice noodles and paper.

Our guide, Nhi, explaining rice hulling.
Rice hulling: hit it with the big stick.
Grinding soaked rice to make rice milk
Steaming rounds of rice milk to make noodles – dried it is rice paper.

The course itself was really good, we were given a demonstration and then we all had our own cooking stations to make our own portions.   And they continuously topped up our drinks, which is nice considering most places here expect you to buy your own bottled water.

First course, Vietnamese salad rolls with peanut hoisin sauce
Second course, Vietnamese crepes
Third course, seafood fried noodles
Fourth course, although started first, Pho Bo

After returning to the hotel and having a dip in the pool to cool off I decided to try out a short bike ride to see how I would go.  Riding a bike here with the traffic is just as crazy as walking, but no worse.

Deciding after all the food I jad eaten I did not want much dinner, I walked into the market and bought some more fruit to try.

Hot weather. Pool. Lounging. Perfect afternoon. (At least until I got bored. I seem to have limited tolerance for lounging)
Random temple I saw on my bike ride.
This farmland is just next to my hotel. Note the traditional style hay stack.
Fresh from market. Red dragon fruit, mangosteen, rambutan and longan.
