Hue to Hoi An, via My Son Sanctuary

16 June

Today was long and hot.  I was travelling in a taxi, and we went via the Hai Van pass, a road which was once extremely deadly, but now a new tunnel has been built for most traffic it is just the scenic route.  It was obviously shown on Top Gear, as I saw many signs advertising “Top Gear Tours”.   It was nice enough, but has nothing on the Great Ocean Road.  I believe you can go up further to a lookout at the top with better views, but it was far too hot for me to want to find out.

My driver made a special stop for me to visit Lang Co beach and take photographs. It was hot, sandy and basically beach like.

The best shot I could get from the top of the pass.
Small shrine at the top of the pass.
Apparently a great backdrop for wedding photos
They were standing up there for ages, I imagine the sitting photos were a relief

We also made a stop at a place where they carve stone from Marble Mountain.  There was some amazing work, including very large pieces.

Stone carvers beginning some new work
A pair of large elephants. A bit big for my luggage.
There were tons of statues (literally and figuratively) outside
Inside they had lots of smaller pieces

In the afternoon I visited My Son Sanctuary.   It was very hot, and as it is mostly ruins not as interesting as I had hoped.  The photos are better than the reality (although I may have just been too hot to appreciate anything)

There were lots of butterflies, of many different types, fluttering around.

After a long hot day I was desperately hoping my hotel, and its pool, were as good as they looked.  Fortunately it was exactly what I wanted, and I did not spend long unpacking before venturing the three feet from my room to the pool.
