Pyrenees Unearthed – Avoca Food & Wine Festival

The Pyrenees Region around Avoca is home to a huge number of vinyards and wineries.  Unfortunately when on a solo driving holiday wine tastings are not much of an option – which is why I was thrilled to find that Avoca was hosting Pyrenees Unearthed, a Food and wine festival in which the wineries would be coming to visit me!

It was a great afternoon, although after all the wine tasting the details may be a touch fuzzy.   I attended masterclasses on Cabernet Sauvignon and mulled wine, listened to the live music and chatted to lots of random people (including a cooking school instructor very enthusiastic about making sure he had the right wines on his wine list, and the bass guitarist from one of the bands who predicted his second set might not be as good as the first given the number of wine tastings he had had).

My favourite bit was probably the very entertaining Chinese dragons, and I may have taken a few too many photos of them – but I think seeing people reacting to them makes for good photos.  I also found a couple more places in Avoca to take photos of on my walks to and from the festival.

There were also some food stands – these guys had great jams and chutneys.
Queues for the food vans were a bit long, but it was good food once you got it.
The masterclasses were held in the Chinese gardens, which was built with the theme of water and fire – the pavilion has charred posts and flame motifs across the roof to symbolise fire.
